I have played with this a bit and polling a keypad is easy, it's the intranet bit that takes the time. I have even had one reading a PC keyboard and sending the data to an LCD and through a serial connection to a PC at 9600. It's the intranet bit that will prove the most challenging bit as it is not serial as such so collisions etc. may have to be taken into account. I know as I am thinking of something similar myself

I think I'm looking for a Pic connected to a keypad and an intra net

 

I've marked this OT as the use is not Home Automation and involves quite a few keypads
