If for some reason HomveVision want to operate the relays permanently then turn of the 12Volt supply and the relays will release.

 

If Homevision fails to operate the relays or the 12V supply or a relay fails you just use the programmer normally.

 

In Mark's house there is no temperature sensing only timed on/off. Temperature is controlled by conventional thermostats so when the house reaches temperature it will shut off.

 

Homevision is controlling the HEATING SYSTEM not the HEATING. The heating system is bog standard and can function as a standalone system however it is being used as a Sub-System of Marks entire HA System.

 

That is how HA should be done. Likewise the lighting is a collection of sub-systems (X10 modules) controlled by HV, Comfort and standalone control. No single point of failure.

just one thing....if the system goes SNAFU and totally out of control then you could end up with a fried or frozen house.

 

This isn't my own idea but I have seen it somewhere...if you wire a couple of standard type dial therm thingys (damned if I know waht they are called but the thing you have to set the temp remote from the central heating controller) into the circuit you can allow frost protection and overheat protection. In effect all it does is cut out the HA system if temp is over x degrees or below x degrees.

 

I don't have the ability to design the circuit to do this but I am sure Mr. Guru Doxey does ;)

I've finished (eventually) the pics and write-up of Keith Doxey's interface between my central heating and HomeVision...

 

"The switch mounted LED's are fed from the 12 volt supply via resistors R1 (Downstairs Zone) and R2 (Upstairs Zone). HomeVision pulls Port A3/A4 low when the heating is OFF which short the LED side of the resistor to ground, this extinguishes the LEDs. The relays are fed from the 12 volt supply and are grounded by Port A1/A2 going low to operate the relay. This turns the heating ON. The mains side of the relays are wired in parallel to the existing programmer contacts and the programmer is set to OFF. In the event of HomeVision or Relay failure the existing programmer can be switched on and conventional heating control is instantly available. As the relays are connected to 240V AC is important that all connections are insulated using heat shrink sleeving and the enclosure containing the relays is only accessible by means of a screwdriver."
