Both units are
JVC
and have both the optical and 'phono' type coaxial connections on the
back. The amp/controller can be configured to accept either or, as
far
as I know my sky box doesn't support this (I know sky are trialing some DD
at
the moment, but my box only has stereo out 'phono' style sockets that I
presume wont have the correct encoded bits), it's the pace unit. So
what
would be my best option to use for the DVD player - optical or coax, and
where
night one get the correct cable/s -would I be correct in assuming that an
ordinary unshielded wired one will be 'bad'.
A
piece of 75 ohm coax should be OK for carrying the bitstream. Try it
and
see - you can always borrow more expensive interconnects from a decent hifi
shop and see if you can hear any difference.
There is some thought that the
electrical->optical->electrical conversion introduces
noise/jitter/etc -
so the coax solution is deemed better. From my point of view, a piece
of
75 ohm coax is easier and cheaper to source (I've got loads spare in the
shed!) than an optical TOS-link cable. Of course, the optical link
will
provide far better immunity to electrical interference - a bit like KAT5 ;)
if
you have a 'noisy' environment. I may in due course try some
different
coax interconnects - but for now it works OK for me, and I have more
pressing
things to attend.
As
usual, you pays your money and you takes your choice - if YOU can't hear
any
difference, then it's not usually worth paying more money
for.
