RE: Do I really need CAT5?

DVD's on the other hand may be a problem (having read your message properly
now). I have actually tried to do this but gave up since the quality I got
was very bad with skipped frames all over the place. I put it down to the
PC not being powerful enough but from your post it seems it is down to the
speed of the network and not the PC's.

Time to get another 10/100

Cheers
Pedro

Tim,

The only _current_ application that comes to mind is high-bandwidth
networking.

I've ripped some of my DVDs onto hard disk for ease of replay. I can
play them back on their "own" PC, or over a 100Mb/sec network,
but over
a 10Mb/sec - no chance.

To be fair, I _don't_ play them back over the network anymore - since a
KAT5 receiver is a more discrete box to have in the bedroom than a spare
PC :-)

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I want lots more KAT5
pairs, or maybe I'll just wait for the switch ;-)

I got into a friendly (well I think it was friendly!) debate with Mark
on Messenger last night regarding CAT5 in my new home.

I don't think I need it, he thinks I should put it in anyway.

Bearing in mind the long dimension is likely to be 10-15 metres and on a
single floor.

I use wireless LAN for networking
I've got a cordless PBX
I'm going to buy a new Marantz RC5200 with RF-IR module
I've got no need for whole house audio

I'm going to install shed loads of LD-11s plus Touchlincs and Homeseer
(I may buy a Homevision, but due to problems linking it into my plasma
I'll only do it if Homeseer isn't up to the job) for lighting and
curtain control.

Can anyone think of good pratical uses for CAT5 in my particular case?

Two on topic posts in two days - that must be a record.

Tim.
