I got into a friendly (well I think it was friendly!) debate with Mark on Messenger last night regarding CAT5 in my new home.

<<How could you possibly doubt that it would be anything other than friendly? You and Mark have always been bestest buddies - no?>>

I don’t think I need it, he thinks I should put it in anyway.

<<That's only because he didn't put in enough himself... *grin*>>

Bearing in mind the long dimension is likely to be 10-15 metres and on a single floor.

I use wireless LAN for networking

<<The only possibly use for a wired LAN is if you want to copy big files around and then I suppose a 10/100 switch by your main PC sorts that "problem" - that's what I do. Almost *EVERYTHING* I do on a PC at home is now across the wireless LAN and the last time I used the laptop "wired" was copying a 1.4Gb email folder from the network to the laptop last week.>>

I’ve got a cordless PBX

<<I'm sure it'll clear up with penecillin...>

I’m going to buy a new Marantz RC5200 with RF-IR module

<<B*stard! How much are they?>>

I’ve got no need for whole house audio

<<Nope ... not if it's going to be anything like your current setup.>>

I’m going to install shed loads of LD-11s plus Touchlincs and Homeseer (I may buy a Homevision, but due to problems linking it into my plasma I’ll only do it if Homeseer isn’t up to the job) for lighting and curtain control.

<<Also consider LW11G's - The German wall switches. All the functionality of an LD11 in a wall mounted unit which offers direct control independent of X10, true Brighten/Dim functionality from the wall switch (the LD11 only cycles through Dim-Bright-Dim-Bright) and the ability to add additional "hardwired" switches just as you can with an LD11 ... they fit in standard UK backboxes as long as you fit 35mm or deeper units (I use 35mm dry lining boxes). I'm using two for controlling bedside/reading lighting for me and the missus and will be running external switches over to the door so that the bedside lights can be turned on and off from the doorway as we walk in or out of the room.>>

Can anyone think of good pratical uses for CAT5 in my particular case?

<<Indoor washing line?>>

Two on topic posts in two days – that must be a record.

<<I'm Impressed.>>

Phil
