Before you rule out 'tooling around' with the bios, what motherboard do
you have. If it is an Abit then bios stuff really is very easy. I
flashed three bios's on ABIT boards on Friday and all went without a
hitch because of the new utilities available from the web. In fact if
you are at all worried and you have an Abit board, then let me know the
model and I will put together a floppy disk image that is 'fool proof'
for flashing the bios. Basically, given this disk, if you have a floppy
disk drive, reliable power supply, and you do exactly as instructed,
then it is very unlikely you will damage your board (I can't say
impossible, but I have not heard of one failing when the correct
procedure was used). The actual bios setting is very straight forward
and can not damage the board in any way, it is also completely
reversible.
If anyone else is interested in flashing their Abit bios then let me
know and I will provide a disk image, just send me the model number (if
you don't know it then it is written on the board between two of the PCI
slots in most cases). This is not risk free, but it is very low risk and
to be honest there are some considerable risks of data loss and system
crashes with some of the older bios's, especially when combined with
some of the newer operating systems and peripherals.
As I said in the other message, once the ACPI is set correctly in the
bios then W2K and WXP seem to pick it up correctly during installation.
I personally have never tried putting ACPI in after installation, nor
would I, but if you are about to build or re-build a system then you
might as well get the bios stuff sorted first.
Regards
Graham
