An opto-isolator is an electrical connection that is not made by physical
wires. The chips I have been looking at behave in a similar fashion to
relays. There is a trigger line and two contacts that make when a power is
applied to the trigger. Inside the chip there is an IR LED and photodiode
that do job of the coil on a normal relay. No physical wires make it good
at
insulating against silly currents. If my understanding is in any way wrong
or incomplete please shout as I am still learning here. There is also
probably lots of different levels of isolation but I only looked at the one
chip type from Rapid.
