Have you considered a folding bicycle such as the Brompton? I use one
and do the 4.5 miles into my office everyday in 16 minutes (22 home as
it's uphill) If there's any traffic it all it's faster than a car and
waaay faster than a bus. They weigh less than 25 pounds, can easily be
carried onto a train, and mine even goes in the boot of an MX-5 (not
much else does!) They may look a bit odd but once your legs/lungs
improve you can pass most other cyclists if that bothers you at all.

Sensible mudguards means you can wear office clothes and there are good
luggage options so carrying clothes, shopping, notebook etc. is easy.
