To a certain extent, academic. The best current solution is
daisy-chaining USB active hubs.

The longer term solution is presumably KUT-5 (Keith's USB Technology) -
an exciting new product from Doxey Technology that will allow USB
signals to be modulated over normal CAT5 cable ;-)

I'm sure I've seen them around, but I've no idea where.  Perhaps someone
else has?
