American (presumably region 1?) DVD's?

I personally prefer region 1. Main reasons are; number of disk available,
they appear much more quickly that the UK version, quite often have more
extra on, bit rate are tend to be higher. However, you don't get all of
those wonderfully dubs in French, Germany, Italian, etc.

The version of the movie can also be different. However you have to visit
the movie sites to get an idea of what is different as they tend to be
minor. There are of course exceptions to the rule, I've read that the
Rocky Horror R2 disk is superior to the R1 version.

Beware of R1 disks that are RCE (Regionaly Coding Enhanced), Some modified
players will not accept them. See if you can borrow one to try before
buying.

I used to use dvdexpress.com, but now use play247.com as the price to ship
