How do I tell whether the phone's ringing?

Before I start, let me pre-empt any responsese along the line of
"listen", OK :-)

Seriously, I'd like Homevision to "do stuff" when the phone's
ringing.

The "stuff" would initially be along the lines of

If I'm watching a DVD, Laserdisk of Video, then pause it
If I'm watching broadcast TV or playing MP3s on the DDAR then turn
the volume down a fair bit

.... but might turn into

[DVD, Laserdisk, VCR]...and then swtich the Telly to the
"Homevision" channel and display the incoming number

Let's shelve the "how do I get the incoming number" bit for the
time
being, and concentrate on the "how do I tell the phone's
ringing"?

Any suggestions? I want a _device_ that either plugs into an input port
on HV or sends an X-10 command. I don't want either a bit of PC
software, nor a kit/circuit diagram ... unless it's also accompanied by
an offer to make it up for me - anyone who's ever seen me soldering will
understand why I feel this way :-)
