I did my inital setup and programming using the keypad and found it to be OK. I have only recently got a UCM but have not found it to be any easier, but expect the newer software updastes to make it much more intuitive. For example; to create a response to turn on A1 you program 65,1,5 to represent housecode A !! It is not that hard to let the user choose 'A' and then convert it to 65 before downloading into the panel.
The main thing to do is write down what you want it to do in English first then try to replicate on paper using comfort responses. When you have done that have it checked on the Comfort-Technical eGroup.
My Comfort setup is basic enough (6 PIRs and a keypad) but the complexity arises when you start to create complex responses using X10 and replays etc. A simple alarm system I found was available 'out of the box'.
