Personally I've been using Musicmatch. It rips and plays and is very
easy to use. It also does the CDDB lookup. Sound cards are irrelevant
as it's all done digitally. On a fast PC it can rip at least 10 times
normal speed. A whole CD in 6 minutes! There's a free fully
functional version or you can pay for one with a few more whistles.
What's more there's a Linux version.

One day I may set up a jukebox and then I'll be interested in
preserving maximum quality. Disk space is very cheap these days.
