My personal fave is SuSE. I've heard that Mandrake is supposed to be
very beginner friendly. RedHat is also fine - but subjectively a
little rougher round the edges.

Whichever you choose, make sure you have all the hardware you intend
to use installed prior to doing the first install - it will make life
a lot easier. In the case of a firewall/router against a cable modem,
that's probably going to mean two network cards (unless you have a
USB modem...)
