It wont work.

as you correctly state, an ORP12 is a light sensitive resistor who's
resistance varies according to the ambient light level.

A microphone is TOTALLY different. It GENERATES electricity in response to
sound waves by moving a coil (which is attached to a moving diaphragm) in a
magnetic field. (DYNAMIC Michrophone only - Capacitor Mics are different
but
still output an electrical signal).

I assume from your question that you wanted to use the soundcard to connect
a light sensor via the MIC socket. It wouldnt work as the output from the
sensor would be at a fixed level for a given light level.

You could attach sensors to the joystick port but you would have to write
the software to read the analogue voltage on the port.

Hi all,

being a newby to all of this my question might be extremely stupid. If that
is the case don't hesitate to tell me so ;-)

My thinking is that I don't need a microphone on my HA computer (running
Linux) and microphones basically basically behave like sound dependent
resistors. If I use a LDR like the ORP12 instead with some software then I
get a nice little light sensor.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
