I haven't tried this either, but if you are going to connect to 'very
basic'
amplifiers, why not just use the built in amp. I intend to us this in my
daughters room, just a DDAR and a pair of speakers, in this mode the DDAR
volume control does work. Another option is a pair of active speakers
(computer speakers) which can also plu straight in to the DDAR and will hve
their own volume control.

P.S. has anyone tried the internal amp, I dont have any spare speakers at
the moment, but I would be interested to hear how bad it is.
