Replace the TSOP1838 with an IRDA receiver and change the ocsillator
frequency of the 555.
The TSOP works at 38kHz (most remotes are 36-40kHz)
The TSOP is available as 1836, 1838, 1840, 1856 but I dont think ther is
one
as high as the IRDA frequency range. They have extremely high sensitivity an
the nominated frequency with an acceptance band of 2kHz either way hence
the
choice of 38K. Outside this they do not receive at all. thats what makes
them immune to crud.

Sorry to bring this tread up AGAIN!
I have finally got round to making up the kit supplied by Ian Bird,
and have found that I cant use it with my Pace digi box, which
apparently is IRDA. Are their any modifications I can mak to the
circuit or is there no hope??
After finding out that I cant use a Pronto with the box, not being
able to have it in the cabinet is the icing on the cake!! :-(
TIA
Stuart
