Hi Ian,
What I did was to build the keypad with a DTMF encoder in it. This sent an
audio signal to the control unit in the house and this had a DTMF decoder.
Bit of an overkill but it worked great. The power of +5V to the keypad was
from a separate supply regulator and fused so even if they shorted it out
it won't work.
An other idea (which I have a prototype design still to be completed) is to
use the Dallas 1-wire iButtons instead. Ok, so you need to carry an iButton
with you but the keyfob ones are quite neat. You can get a couple of
samples of the ROM devices from the www.maxim-ic.com website.
