are you running a ftp server or web server which is accessible from the
outside? If so then my understanding is that this will only work with NAT
if
you have port forwarding enabled/configured.

Other applications that don't like NAT are certain video conferencing
programs, netmeeting for example will only work in one direction for video.

explains the problem much more concisely than I can.
