Depends on the machine!

Some are *only* locked on spin, not many but it ain’t worth chancing it.

What about a relay connected to the door lock solenoid.

Machines pause whilst they fill, heat etc, but if the door is unlocked MUST have finished.

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head, none as simple as just setting a timer when the washing is put on, but I guess you are looking for something smarter than that. What about some sort of noise/vibration sensor, i would have thought that it would be possible to have a vibration sensor read every minute and when it stops reading report that the wash is finished (of course there could be a problem if it is pausing between cycles, so maybe check for 5 consequtive non-readings). If the machine has a see through window, then a PIR might even do the job, but I'm not sure about that. Final option is put a camera down there and just check on the TV to see if it is done. Just one thing to consider, if there is an announcement, then what happens if 'wifey' (don't think I'd get away with that particular term ;-) ) doesn't hear it, what would be nice is to have an LED flashing on the comffort keypads (bit like if there is a message) as well.

Regards

Graham
