There you go - if you ever get the chance to repeat the test with the Siltech do try it - I'll swear that the female vocals on "Carry on up the Charts" by The Beautiful South sound much clearer with the Siltech HF6 (£150) versus the Supra EFF-I (£45). You might also want to try it using a "proper" CD transport rather than a DVD player. While my Arcam DV-88 works as well as my Audiolab 8000CD when used as a transport (it isn't as good as a straight CD player - and in fact the late Bob Tomalski compared it to the Meridian 508 when used as a pure CD transport), my old Panasonic DVD A350 was pants in comparison. I'm not saying that your results are invalid - just suggesting a way that you *may* be able to hear the same difference that I *think* I heard.

There are those (not me) that say bi-wiring makes no difference so it really is whatever works for you. If you ever get the chance to borrow a second 10P try bi-amping. If you think that bi-wiring makes a significant improvement, bi-amping will knock your socks off. The best way to do it is use one stereo amp for the left speaker and one for the right speaker - that way you avoid any possibility of cross-talk between channels. It also means that you can use long interconnects and short speaker cables. I bi-amp my centre speaker in exactly that fashion. Somewhere I've got a picture of my Home Cinema setup which shows the power amp stacks behind my speakers, I'll post it somewhere when I find it. My main speakers are bi-amped using four mono-blocks which I managed to secure for half price when Tag Mclaren were getting rid of their stocks of Audiolab 8000MXs. It made a massive improvement over the single 8000PX I had been using - and again I got to put the power amps right behind the speakers using short 1m lengths of speaker cable.

Tim.
PS I found the photo - forgive the quality but it was taken by Phil "I've got a fuck-off digital camera but don't know how to use it yet" Harris

Well we done a review tonight of digital interconnects, I was unable to get a Siltech lead as suggested by Tim so we made do with the following kit.

Sony DVPS525D DVD player
Arcam Alpha10 amp with Dave module
Arcam Alpha10P power amp
Monitor REF 703 speakers (bi wired)

Leads tested were

QED QUNEX SR75 £60.00
QED QUNEX P75 £25.00 (my lead)
TDK cheapo audio interconnect FREE

It may not be top top notch gear its still about £3500.00 worth, we had three participants two blind and one changing the leads, a range of music was listened to using the same pieces as suggested.

The results, they all sounded the same, even the cheapo lead. We honestly could not pick out any noticeable difference.

As I could not get a really expensive lead and to stretch the test a bit further I made one up using 1 mtr of 6 core alarm cable (unscreened) with two of the crappiest phono connectors I could find, these were attached by twisting the cable to the terminals rather than soldering.

We reviewed the QUNEX SR75 against my made up lead, again blind.

The results, they sounded just the same. SWMBO came in and had a listen and actually said she preferred the alarm cable, why did I spend £25.00.

Whilst I would not disagree that good quality interconnects for analogue signals are a must, I cannot say the same for digital.

The biggest improvement I found with my setup was bi wiring the speakers and using the 10P, it made a vast difference.
