I have a little program written by Nokia for setting up monitors.

It shows various crosshatch and other test patterns and graduated scales
for
correct brightness/contrast setting. I will dig out a copy and stick it on
a
website for anyone interested.

Erm, slight correction there Tim ... until you upped the brightness a
couple
of notches there was no shadow detail. There's no such thing as "too
black"
(well, I suppose there is but not in this case). Basically the Panasonic
does have a black-black rather than the grey-black of most other plasmas
but
the way Tim had it set up - whilst technically correct acording to Avia -
left the suits of armour in Gladiator as having no noticable detail. Just
lifting the brightness allowed the Panasonic to resolve detail on the
costumes.

This isn't in any way trying to deny that the Panny isn't a major
improvement on the plasmas that have gone before.
