Take a look at http://www.minidisc.org/ and you should find some home-brew alternatives under the hacking and experimentation pages. I'm sorry I can't be more specific but I don't have web access at the moment (The company's ISP has lost routing capability :-).
 
I was browsing the site this morning and noticed a couple of links to slink projects.

This box of tricks here (https://www.nirvis.com/orderform.htm) goves you access from , say , your pc to the slink port on sony cd players - anyone know of a cheaper one you can buy ?

$250 seems damn expensive - especially as this product does far too much for it's own good !
