Thats the wonderful thing about the RS232 standard....there are soooo many
configurations to choose from. The cable you bought would have been a
"proper" null modem cable with all lines connected (crossed where
required)
ensuring true handshaking.
As the spec of PC and other hardware has increased, serial comms can almost
always handle a continuous stream of data at the maximum rate. Because of
this many devices implement the most basic 3 wire connection Tx, Rx, GND
with no handshaking. This sometimes makes it neccessary to "fool"
the
hardware by making a loopback connection on the plug to ensure correct
conditions on the handshaking lines.
Cant comment on the config of the E*** as you all bought them while I was
on
holiday in Cyprus. At least I have got an iPaq now so I dont feel totally
left out :-)

That certainly did the trick - custom cable with dsr and dtrvtied
up right has me writing this on my wireless pod.
