Hi
Guys,
Been
trying a second hand Rotel 5 channel THX power amp as an "upgrade" to
my
beloved Yamaha DSP-A1 and it does make a more than minor improvement. I've
just watched Lost In Space and the whole thing is far more dynamic - even
at
low volumes. Hopefully the neighbours will be out tomorrow and I'll be able
to
give it a try at less "neighbour friendly" levels!
Have
one problem though ... that's my video scaler for my CRT projector. When it
is
on I get awfull howling noises coming through the speakers being driven by
the
Rotel and so I assume that the PSU on the QuadScan simply throws huge
amounts
of mains noise out which the Rotel can't reject through its PSU. The power
specs for the QuadScan are 12-18v @ 23w (so about 1.5A then yeah?)
terminated
in a 2.5mm barrel type power connector with the centre positive - does
anyone
local to me (Winchester) have any sort of suitable PSU that I could borrow
to
try powering the QuadScan from to see if I can get rid of the
noise?
The
guy who is selling the amplifier has had exactly the same problem with the
PSU
for his QuadScan introducing noise into the audio and so I know that it's
not
just my setup and that it happens with all of the QuadScan PSUs. (I assume
that this is why he's selling it but at the asking price it's a decent
bargain.)
I've
tried powering the QuadScan from a long extension lead running from the
garage
(to try to introduce a longer cable run between the two as damping) but
that
hasn't helped, I've also had them both plugged into adjacent sockets on the
stripblock but with no change. Unplugging the PSU from the QuadScan and
plugging the PSU into the mains gives no noise (reasonably enough given
that
there is then no load on the PSU).
Any
other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...
Cheers
Phil
