Thanks Paul, but the limited reading I have done suggests that LAME is
superior.

I'm going to initially do some simple tests with straight encoding at
different bit-rates, then once I've found out how much I can throw away
without compromising the sound quality, I'll try with VBR enabled.

If I get really bored, I'll also try some tracks encoded with xing to see
if
the sites I've read are telling the truth.
