It was actually a serious question. I'm going to do the test blind - I

know whether I'm listening to an mp3 or a raw file - I'll just set the DVD
player to "random" turn the display off, and let it choose which
track to
play...

I know that there will be a level of compression that even my trained ears
will find pleasing on what can be fairly described as a very revealing HiFi
system. I've been promising to do this for ages, but haven't had a CD
transport capable of coping with mp3 or CDRs. The new one should arrive
this
afternoon. It CAN read CDRs (with any file structure you care to put on
it),
and, as well as decoding the data stream internally, it can output the data
stream to my Meridian 561 decoder - which is regarded by many as the holy
grail of DSP/DAC systems. It is basically a PC with two custom built DSP
chips. I upgraded it last week with a downloaded file which now gives it
Pro-logic II capabilities.
