Yikes, it was all sounding good until then. I've been looking further
at home-brew and it's not too difficult.

I've already built a very small box (fag packet) that receives Ir from
a remote, decodes it with an AVR processor, and drives an audio
attenuator chip. This sits between TV and amp to provide otherwise
absent remote volume.

I can easily take this further, but I'm surprised nothing is available
off-the-shelf.
