Have you got details on what 'someone' is doing with the RS232, What
functionality it available etc or URL??

Xantech makes an amp that is both IR and rs-232 controllable.  It is the
ZPR68 and I think it does what you want.  The spec on their web page says
the rs-232 is for future capability, but I know someone in the UK who is
using the serial port now with good success.  It's not cheap (I think more
than $1000).  Here is a link to the spec page:
