Nope, sorry to disappoint, it's very dull (no pun intended), nothing
illegal [1], immoral etc, just too complicated to explain more simply...

Anyway, I suspect silver halide would probably need some more complex
control gear and would be murderously difficult to dim!

I'm sure that if you could use standard controllers for silver halide
lights, the amount of 'activities' that use them would bring the prices
down a bit, in the same way that PIC12c508's came shooting down in price
once every man and his dog started using them to 'chip' their
playstations...
