Hi Nigel,

Mode Electronics used to make some controllers for shop displays and
nightclubs that would slowly fade up and down over quite lengthy periods
but
I have just looked at their website and it looks like all th eolder stuffis
no longer made :-(

If you could get hold of a 0-10v controlled dimmer you could have the
control input to the dimmer connected to a large capacitor which was slowly
charged or discharged via a variable resistor. I am aware that this is a
semi homebrew solution and not what you were originally looking for.
