SMSs are stored by the network, and it will hold the message until your
phone reconnects to the network. This also appears to work if you are
abroad
- so long as you have set up international roaming, and your phone has
managed to connect, SMS messages appear to arrive at your phone without
problem, and at no cost! As it happens, you can specify a time-to-live on
an
SMS, so if it is not delivered before this time interval expires, the
network erases the message.

On a related note. It used to be the case that the various networks offered
modem dial-in numbers to SMS gateways. The modem connected and you could
send an SMS using simple text commands.

Does anyone know if this service is still available, and what the access
numbers are for the various networks?

Ray.
