The future of 418MHz kit

I've just read some info from the LPRA (low power radio association) which
clears up the future of 418MHz SRDs (Short Range Devices)- ie remote
controls etc

They can legally be type-approved until 31 December 2002. After that date
it will be illegal to modify 418MHz modules (although the encoders/decoders
that are added will not be affected, just the type-approved RF bit)
They can be legally sold until 31 December 2007

After 31 December 2007, it is expected that the band will be reassigned to
TETRA (Trans European Trunked RAdio) mobile comms.

At this stage, Dolphin (at present the UK TETRA operator) could sue the
operator of a 418MHz system if it can be proved that it actively interferes
with TETRA. However the RA (Radiocommunications Authority) cannot insist
on the removal of deployed 418MHz systems unless they are proven to
interfere with TETRA.

Hope that helps clear up any 418/433 dilemnas- (433MHz systems are
unaffected by the above changes- TETRA will probably end up with a
410-430MHz band).

The current lack of guarantee of interference from other correctly licensed
transmissions in the unlicensed SRD band still stands.

Nigel
