One thing, are you _sure_ that he isn't dialling a call-waiting disable
string before he connects?  That's quite a standard thing when setting up a
call, and he might have forgotten about it.  Call waiting beeps knacker
modem calls, so it usually needs to be disabled before you start.  If call
waiting is disabled, CWID will also presumably be disabled.
