I heard about something from Microsoft, similar to MP3 BUT.....
The downloaded file was "keyed" to the machine downloading it
based on
information it extracted from the PC. Files were NOT playable on any other
machine and upgrading or even just rebuilding the machine could render the
file unplayable.

Dont know if this was the same thing, but I for one am happy with MP3.
At the end of the day everything has its price, and if the price for MP3 is
the requirement for a slightly bigger hard drive then I think its worth it.

The file size can only come down with increased compression meaning either
lower quality or a super whizzy algorithm for decoding it which will need a
higher spec PC to do the work.

Wav files Big but play on anything
RA files Smaller but crap sound. High bitrate needs a pentium
MP3 Much smaller files but needs a Pentium or "LP3" add on

the future....
????
10K for a 5 minute song but needs a Pc with 32 P9 4000 processors to decode
it.

It depends what you want it for. MP3, at higher rates, provides acceptable
sound quality for most people to listen to on a reasonable stereo. I would
be amazed if MS have managed to produce a better perceptual coding system,
but they might...

Either way, MP3 will probably be around for a while, not everyone uses MS
operating systems, y'know!
