I'm no fan of Micro$oft, but have you had a look at this:

If the claims are correct it would seem that the days of MP3 might be
numbered.
I've no idea about the speed of the codec (the main thrust of this thread
I know), but disk space wise it seems to come in at something approaching
50% of that required by MP3.
