The problem with that is that your "mask" will cast a shadow and
not give
the nice clean border that you're used to seeing.
This is why I want to actually physically mask out the screen itself to
16:9
... I'm happy to have a 4:3 image in the centre of the 16:9 screen with
black borders left and right. This has the advantage that it will stop my
missus saying "Yes, I know you say that widescreen is better but like
this
it fills the whole of the screen..." ... a statement which is actually
quite
difficult to counter much of the time!

I brought my screen in a 4:3 format so that when I have time I will fit an
additional down sensor and second roller with black fabric, when I want
16:9
the screen will not drop fully and the top mask will lower blanking off the
top. The area around the screen that was masked when it was made is very
very black and does a superb job of tidying up the edge of the picture,
anyone know where I can get some black fabric?.
