ISTR, US modems use the middle 2 of a RJ45, UK ones 2 and 6 of a BT
jack. This is complicated by the use of some manufacturers of US modem
hardware with adaptor leads!

The above page has a link to the uk.telecom FAQ which agrees with my
memory. The amount of fluff between my ears sometimes worries me!
