So what was the verdict on the TiVO discussions? Any other list
members with a TiVO yet?

I've been _really_ impressed with mine - it will completely transform
my TV viewing life (life?!), but with a big caveat - it won't control
my Westminster cable box, which rather defeats the object!

The technical support bods (Sky call centre) have tried valiantly
(The whole script from "Is your remote control rattling?",
"Is the
box plugged in?" Right up to "what is your software revision
number"
to no avail).

The other gripes on an otherwise very well engineered and thought-out
product are:

- the mpeg encoding seems to adjust the brightness of the whole
screen image from time-to-time. This can be really irritating
- the TiVO neither passes through nor records the teletext data,
which means that you can't play back recordings and view subtitles,
nor can you rewind live programmes whilst viewing subtitles. In fact,
to use teletext at all you have to press the "bypass TiVO" button
-
most annoying.

In it's favour
- being able to pause or rewind "live" broadcasts is really
handy.
- the TiVO suggestions have been impressive, although I can see this
falling apart in a large household where members have conflicting
views of what is worthy
- playback quality (apart from brightness artifact) is fine - better
than my old VHS, but not quite up to broadcast.
- being able to collapse in an armchair and view a fave programme
without requiring the foresight to set the vid is fantastic - less TV
dross, more quali-vision.
