Just about to carpet.   I know all the services run under the floor, but
not
how deep - so I'm very wary of attacking it with a grinder.   As for the
roof; thats being replaced as soon as the roofers finish dealing with the
various emergencies that the current deluge has brought about.
Unfortunately from the cabling point of view it's in a conservation area so
I can't change the roof line.   I did think about pulling down the ceiling
and having it redone but came to the conclusion that that was too extreme -
I can cable the front half fairly easily and I use cordless in the rear
(living room and kitchen area).

You have my sympathies :-)  That _is_ unusual, especially with the
courtyard!

In 10 years when the roof needs replacing (from bitter experience!), make
sure they raise it 6" so you can put ducts in!!!  Alternatively,
attack
floors with angle grinders when carpets are being replaced, or rooms
redecorated, but you'd probably thought of that anyway.

Maybe you should investigate the concealment opportunities offered by
cornice...
