Get broadband for a tenner a month

BT had better watch out, a Luxembourg owned wireless data company is
planning to introduce a broadband service in the UK for £9.99 a month,
about
a quarter of BT's prospective price. Tele2 is hoping to tempt people who
don't want to wait for BT's ADSL service to take theirs instead. The
company
has a license from the Radiocommunications Agency to operate masts carrying
data to and from users' buildings.

Tele2 already has 600 business users around its UK HQ in Reading, Leeds,
Nottingham and Leicester. It now plans to launch the service to consumers,
spreading its network to 40 centres nationwide by the end of 2001. Monthly
payments of £9.99 will buy you a 150 kilobit-per-second connection - 2.5
times faster than a dial-up modem. BT's 500 kbps ADSL is £39.99.

There is a drawback though, users will have to live within line of sight of
one of Tele2's base stations, and will have to spend £49.99 for a
laptop-sized receiver to be stuck on their roof. But this is still cheaper
than the £150 BT charges for its Openworld ADSL product.

Tele2 reportedly won't make a profit on the service, but by pipping BT to
the post, it's hoping to attract customers and will then eventually
introduce faster and more expensive connections
