I bought a few about a year ago from a surplus electronics store on the
web.
I can't remember the name, but I have links ot about 10 at
www.homeautomationindex.com.  Look for the "Electronic
Components" section.

What I bought had a keypad (0-9 and 2 others) and an LCD and a 9 pin serial
cable.  It runs at 9600 baud and you just send text to it to be displayed.
When a button is pressed, the character for that button is sent out the
serial port.  Very easy to interface to.  It even accepts some control
characters to clear the screen and a few other things.

The keypad/lcd wasn't pretty, you'd have to make an enclosure for it.

I think each unit cost $9.  So, if this is what you are looking for, check
the surplus electronic sites for something.
