Dan, this is always a concern. It's perfectly all right for a piece of
software to say "a new verison may be available, do you wish to check
now?" (and possibly ask again on a monthly basis)

It is most certainly not okay for software to go off on it's own and
make that check.

It's worth perhaps running a network monitor, and seeing what data HS
is trying to send.
