The problem is that lots of Soundcards have _internal_ GM synths, and the
standard Linux drivers are fine for doing things like "use the
wavetable on
your AWE/32 to play this .MID file" and it's not clear whether they
support
"use the external MIDI interface to drive an external device".

Practically all sound cards have MIDI these days. Go with a
soundblaster for maximum compatibility.
