I was thinking it would be relatively straight forward to modify them
to run off a mains supply and use the batteries for backup...

It was covered in gushing terms in yesterdays on-line Mirror and Sun.
Sadly they don't seem to archive their stories... the Mirror (IIRC)
referred to the guys in the documentary as "scientists". Ha ha!
