How many extra ports do you require? - 1? - 2?
If 1 - 2 is enough, the cheapest way that I've found (free for me!) is to
add one of the 1 or 2 port serial cards that were very commonly given away
with modems a few years ago, when many PC's didn't have the newer 16550
UARTS required for the higher modem speeds.
I had several of these in my box of bits: - 2 US Robotics 2-port cards that
were "in the box" with some USR Sportster 28.8's that I bought a
few years
ago, and also 2 1-port cards that were given away with Hayes Optima 28.8's
that I bought.
I have had these sitting in my box of bits for years, wondering if I would
ever use them, and lo & behold, I recently installed a USR 2-port one
in my
main NT server at home. - works a treat, I now have 4 COM ports, 3 with
modems on, and one for the UPS.
I'm also expecting to install another one in the near future in my HA PC,
as
I've now run out of serial ports on that (since I started using one for
Winamp), and I'll want to add an IR interface soon, and as it runs WIN2000,
it will have to be a serial IR device.
BUT, here's the good news! - I've got enough of these to spare one, so if
you want, you can have a 1-port card for the cost of a couple of stamps. -
If you're interested, mail me your address privately, and I'll post one to
you in a jiffy bag....
Regards.
