WRONG !!!

Surge protectors ABSORB interference.
Surges are unwanted interference on the mains sine wave.

X10 by being superimposed onto the powerline is itself an interference
signal but in this case a wanted one.

The surge protector is doing its job but the better designed ones have
chokes in series with the incoming power feed and then capacitors and over
voltage devices across all 3 conductors to kill any residual interference.

Also you missed one important point from the original post....

What gives? I have not moved or changed anything, and suddenly the X-10
commands are being blocked or masked somehow.

..... it is possible that the signal was borderline and some other device
in the house or even externally is also absorbing some of the signal. When
the AV kit is also turned on the signal drops to an unuseable level.

It could also be that one of the pieces of kit has developed a fault with
its own built in filters and is causing the problem. The best thing is to
unplug all the equipment and reconnect one by one until it stops working.

Is is ALL X10 that is dead in the house or just modules in one area close
to the AV kit?
