Short of mounting an IR transmitter or the X10 light switch modules in
every
room is there anyway to turn these modules on and off manually?? this gear
costs a fortune here the light switches and IR remotes cost around $160NZD.

For appliance rail module, I think there is a difference with worth to use
them instead of lamp module : You can use them with a permanent
on/off switch and a momentary on swith. As I know the lapm module only
works with momentary on switch. So, if you want to use them with
existing wires and switch, you have to think about it
