They also use identd to authorise users, which involves the IRC server
briefly connecting to your machine on port 113 to verify you are who
you say you are (or not, in the case of those of us who have written
our own identd servers :).
If your firewall blocks incoming TCP, as many do, then you may
experience
difficulty.
I believe there are some servers that don't bother with identd tho.
