Re: Basic question - how to connect cat5

Your CAT5 cable should have four twisted pairs of cable coloured as follows:
BROWN, WHITE with BROWN stripes
GREEN, WHITE with GREEN stripes
BLUE, WHITE with BLUE stripes
ORANGE, WHITE with ORANGE stripes

Assuming this is the case then you need to match the colours to the slots on the back of the patch panel (or RJ45 socket) as follows:

hold the socket the correct way up, looking at the back of it

you should see two rows of four slots to receive the wires

starting with the top row, left hand side, the colours (of the wires) should be as follows:

BROWN, WHITE with BROWN stripes, GREEN, WHITE with GREEN stripes

then the bottom row is as follows:

WHITE with BLUE stripes, BLUE, WHITE with ORANGE stripes, ORANGE

I hope this helps and in anticipation of your next question, if you want to wire an RJ45 plug then hold it with the opening towards you and the metal pins on top, the colours from left to right are as follows:

WHITE with ORANGE stripes,
ORANGE
WHITE with GREEN stripes
BLUE
WHITE with BLUE stripes
GREEN
WHITE with BROWN stripes
BROWN

Regards

Graham

P.S. when buying patch pannels or ports I always make sure they have the colours stamped on them (I use Krone blocks in mine) it makes it much easier !

Subject: [ukha_d] Basic question - how to connect cat5

All,

Please excuse this very basic question.

We are in the process of building our house and I have laid plenty of cat5 to each room. Now I want to connect the cables to a patch panel in my study at one end and to rj45 sockets in each room at the other.

My problem is that I am not sure how the individual strands should be laid out for each connection.

Is there an idiots guide to cabling with cat5 anywhere?

Regards
